Getting a colour match right

Buy by the code, not the colour name
“Silver” covers dozens of factory shades. Every seller mixes from the paint code, so get the code first — the search above gives it to you free.

Check for variants
Some codes were mixed slightly differently over the years or between factories. If the seller offers variants, ask for the one for your car’s year.

Spray a test card first
Paint a piece of card, let it dry and hold it against the car in daylight. Colour looks different wet, and older paint has faded.

Blend, don’t butt up
Fade new paint into the surrounding area rather than stopping at a hard edge — even a perfect match can show at a line.

Can I buy car paint by registration?

Is spray paint by registration an exact match?
It is mixed to the same factory formula, so on a car in good condition it matches closely. Faded or previously repaired paint may differ slightly — test on card first and blend the edges.
Pen, bottle or spray — which do I need?
A pen for stone chips, a bottle with brush for scratches up to about 30 cm, and an aerosol for scuffs, bumper corners and anything bigger. The calculator on this page picks for you.
Do I need lacquer?
For metallic and pearl paints, yes, and most modern solid colours are lacquered too. Lacquer gives the gloss and protects the colour.
